The “Ijazah” in Quran

The Ijazah is a certificate that permits its holder to teach and recite the Holy Quran with Tajweed. Its purpose is to establish an unbroken chain of authorised transmitters that leads back to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

What is Ijazah?

Linguistically, Ijazah means “permission,” “authorization,” or “license.” In Islamic tradition, it refers to a certification that grants its holder the authority to teach and recite the Holy Quran with Tajweed.

The aim of Ijazah is to ensure the authenticity of the Quran’s transmission by preserving a chain of authorised teachers all the way back to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Why Should You Obtain an Ijazah?

An Ijazah certificate is a recognition from a qualified authority that you are authorised to transmit the Quran, teach others, and even grant Ijazah in the future. It confirms that the student has learned directly from a teacher, word by word, and mastered proper recitation or memorization.

How to Obtain an Ijazah Certificate?

• To obtain Ijazah in Quran Recitation with Tajweed, the student must recite the entire Quran correctly with Tajweed from the Mushaf.

• To obtain Ijazah in Quran Memorization (Hifz), the student must memorize the entire Quran and recite it by heart to the teacher.

• A free trial class is available for students to assess their level in recitation, Tajweed, and memorization.

• Upon successful completion, the student receives an official Ijazah Certificate.
